Seattle!

Last week was M's spring break from school. We spent 5 days in Seattle visiting Aunt Sally and having some great new experiences.

Wednesday, when we arrived, it was a (surprisingly!) sunny day. We spent some time at the beautiful Bellevue park and playground to get out all of the energy that had accumulated on the long airplane ride to Seattle. What a great park! I wish Memphis had more parks like that - it is beautiful with fountains, gravel paths, wide green grassy areas and a super cool playground. It also had not one single speck of litter visible anywhere in spite of the many people enjoying the park. We headed up to Newcastle golf course to get a view of the city and the Cascade and Olympic mountains while the sun was out and you could see the view. It was chilly up there, so we headed into the clubhouse to warm up and enjoy the beautiful view from inside. M had hot chocolate with about 3 inches of whipped cream on top!

We had dinner at a sushi restaurant where the sushi comes around on a little conveyor belt and you just pick off what you want. M was not a huge fan of the sushi, but he was willing to try it. He did like the edamame and tempura shrimp though.

Thursday was a lazy day with Aunt Sally. She and I did a little shopping in the morning. Thursday afternoon we took M bowling for his very first real bowling ever. Fortunately for B and M, the lane had bumpers. At first M was a little disappointed that he wasn't "winning" but later on decided that bowling had been lots of fun, no matter the score. (For the record, I did beat B)

Friday it POURED down rain. Supposedly this is very un-Seattle like, but boy was it miserable. We decided to head to the Museum of Flight out by the Boeing factory. Very, very cool museum, but sadly both the Concorde and the original Air Force One planes were closed that day. Normally you can walk into the planes and look around. Happily, the rest of the museum was really neat. M enjoyed it, especially the part about space. We walked through a section of the International Space Station (recreation) and saw moon buggies and more. He also enjoyed the WWII exhibit and I got to teach him a little about WWII history - Axis and Allies - and about the fact that my grandfather has flown for the US Navy in WWII. They didn't have any big bombers like he flew on, but we still got to explore the smaller fighter planes and read their markings. I taught M that you could tell how many enemy fighters a pilot had shot down by the flags painted on the side of the cockpit. He thought that was very cool. (I'd love to show you a photo of this, but B left the SD card for our camera in the hotel room, so no photos of the museum...)

Saturday was another rainy day. In the morning we took a field trip to Uwajimiai which is the Asian grocery chain in Seattle. They had the coolest seafood section and M got to see squid, live tilapia, Dungeness crab, and a geoduck (pronounced "gooey duck") The geoduck is like a large clam with this giant arm sticking out of its shell. It is apparently quite tasty although I will have to take Sally's word on that. Sat. afternoon, Sally, B and I headed to downtown Seattle to see a live taping of Prairie Home Companion. It was a blast and our seats were awesome - 2nd row! The musical talent was very good, including Brandi Carlisle who was absolutely fantastic. And, of course, Garrison Keillor was engaging and funny. When we got home from that, we spent some time coloring Easter eggs.Sunday, the Easter Bunny came to Seattle! M had been worried that he might not know where to find us, but that EB, he is a smart bunny... We had a nice time finding eggs and enjoying the Easter gifts before heading to the airport for our journey home.

We love Seattle, in spite of the rain, and can't wait for our next trip!
